Greener Ways Strategy 2025-2030

Our Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategy, the Greener Ways Strategy 2025-2030 is an ambitious plan which outlines our commitment to creating energy-efficient, cost-effective homes while supporting a sustainable future. During our big plan road show in January 2025, we asked residents what the most important environmental factor they would like to see us achieve in the future.

Our strategy has reflected this.

In our 25/26 annual report, we will be reporting against the strategy to see how we are progressing.

  • Our Vision

    By 2030, we aim to deliver homes that are not only energy-efficient but also enhance the quality of life for our residents. Our strategy ensures that our homes are fit for the future, contributing to a greener and more sustainable world.

  • Our Commitment

    We recognise our critical role in addressing climate change and are dedicated to embedding sustainability throughout our organisation. Our strategy is underpinned by an annual action plan and dedicated resources to support our sustainable commitments. Progress will be monitored and reported to our Resident Engagement Panel and Board Members.

They are the way forward for the planet and will affect all of us, and it only takes a small step to change something. Small savings by all of us will bring changes to everyone. If Cornerstone can reduce its carbon footprint, all residents will benefit from it.

Energy efficient homes

Energy efficiency of homes is measured using an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC). An Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rates how energy-efficient a home is, from A (most efficient) to G (least efficient). The rating looks at how much energy the home uses and loses, such as through heating, lighting, or poor insulation. By law, all our homes must reach at least a Band C rating by 2030.

Currently (as of 31/01/2025):

  • 85.1% of our stock that has Valid EPCs meet bands A, B or C. Leaving 14.9% at band D or below.
  • Our targets align with the current Government target to achieve band C for all properties by 2030.
  • We know that 17% of our properties have renewable energy sources.
  • In addition to improving the energy efficiency of existing properties, we will seek to improve the energy efficiency of our offices.

Exeter Community Energy (ECOE) is a community-owned social enterprise dedicated to helping residents reduce energy use and tackle fuel poverty. Through their Healthy Homes for Wellbeing scheme, they offer free, practical support to households across Exeter, Mid Devon, East Devon, Teignbridge, and Torbay.

They have a friendly team of Home Energy Advisers who provide tailored advice to help you stay warm, save money, and make your home more energy efficient. We made 29 referrals to ECOE in 2024 / 2025 They can support you with:

  • Checking energy tariffs and switching suppliers
  • Applying for the Warm Home Discount
  • Registering for the Priority Services Register
  • Tips for saving energy and water
  • Accessing grants for insulation and heating
  • Advice on using heating controls effectively
  • Understanding and using smart meters
  • Referrals for help with benefits and debt advice
