Aids and Adaptations
Help to Make Your Home Suitable for Your Needs
At Cornerstone, we are committed to supporting people with disabilities and other needs to live independently in their own homes. We can do this by modifying or adapting your home, providing it is reasonable and practical to do so.
Please note that we would not normally agree to install a level access shower above ground floor unless the building has lift access. We would only consider installing level access showers in houses if the home is not under or over occupied, although we look at each case individually.
If it is not possible to make adaptations to your home, we can give you advice about finding other accommodation more suitable for your needs.
What We Can Install
- Additional internal banister rails
- Over bath showers
- Half steps
- Extra power sockets for specialist equipment
- Specialist toilets
- Lever handle taps
- Levelling of door thresholds
- Ramps
- Key safes
- Grab rails
- Outside handrails
- Flashing light systems for people who are deaf
- Door frame protectors for wheelchair users
Major Adaptations
If you need a major adaptation like a level access shower or stair lift, you will need an assessment from an Occupational Therapist first. We work closely with Occupational Therapists from local hospitals. Call Care Direct on 0345 1551 007 or email csc.caredirect@devon.gov.uk to arrange a social care needs assessment.
Once we have received this assessment and subject to funding being available, we should be able to go ahead with the adaptation. However, if the cost of the adaptation is over our budget limit, you will need to apply for a Disabled Facilities Grant through your local council. We can help you understand this process.
How to Apply
If you think you might need any of these adaptations or need further advice, please contact 01392 273462 or mail@cornerstonehousing.net
You can also get information by contacting your local council directly.
