Preparing for Universal Credit

30/04/2018

What is it?

You may have heard about Universal Credit (UC) – the new benefit replacing other benefits such as Jobseekers Allowance (JSA), Child and Working Tax Credits, Employment Support Allowance (ESA) and Housing Benefit.  This only affects you if you are of working age and not claiming your pension.

When will it happen?

UC is going live in June 2018 for some Mid Devon and East Devon areas and in September 2018 for other areas, including Exeter and Teignbridge.

Once UC has been rolled out in your area, if you need to make a new claim for benefits or if you have certain changes in your circumstances, you will need to apply for UC.

In the meantime, if you make a new claim for benefits you will still get the old style benefit like JSA, ESA or Tax Credits.

What does it mean for me?

UC is one monthly payment which includes living and housing costs. You will need to manage your money and pay your bills, including your rent, from each single monthly payment. Remember your rent is a priority and should be paid before many of your other bills.

Claims for UC are usually made online. It is possible to make your claim in other ways, but these will take much longer to process and could result in your benefits being delayed.

What should I do next?
