Aids and adaptations

At Cornerstone, we are committed to supporting people with disabilities and other needs to live independently in their own homes. We can do this by modifying or adapting your home providing it is reasonable and practical to do so.

Please note that we would not normally agree to the installation of a level access shower above ground floor unless the accommodation had lifted access. We would only consider installing level access showers in houses if the accommodation is not under or over occupied, although each case is looked at individually.

If it is not possible to make adaptations to your home, we can give you advice about finding other accommodation more suitable for your needs.

What we can install

  • Additional internal banister rails
  • Over-bath showers
  • Half steps
  • Extra power sockets for specialist equipment
  • Specialist toilets
  • Lever handle taps
  • Levelling of door thresholds
  • Ramps
  • Key safes
  • Grab rails
  • Outside handrails
  • Flashing light systems for the deaf
  • Door frame protectors for wheelchair users

Major Adaptations

Where major adaptations are needed, we work closely with other professionals such as Occupational Therapists from local hospitals. Call Care Direct on 0345 1551 007 or email csc.caredirect@devon.gov.uk to speak to them about having a social care needs assessment.

For level access shower or stair lift, Cornerstone would require a written assessment of your needs completed by an Occupational Therapist.

Once Cornerstone has received this assessment and subject to funding being available we should be able to proceed with the adaptation.

However, if the cost of the adaptation is over our budget limit, you will need to apply for a Disabled Facilities Grant through your local council.

If you think that you might qualify for any of these adaptations or need further advice, please contact Cornerstone on 01392 273462 or mail@cornerstonehousing.net Alternatively you can obtain information yourself by contacting your local council.
